What is RippleNet?

RippleNet is Ripple's comprehensive global payments network that connects banks, payment providers, and other financial institutions through a unified infrastructure designed to modernize cross-border payments. The network enables participating institutions to send and receive payments instantly across borders with unprecedented transparency, lower costs, and operational efficiency compared to traditional correspondent banking systems.

Launched in 2012 and continuously evolved since, RippleNet emerged as Ripple's response to the fundamental inefficiencies plaguing international payments. Traditional cross-border transactions often require multiple intermediary banks, take 3-5 business days to settle, and involve opaque fee structures that can cost institutions and their customers between 6-7% in total transaction fees. RippleNet addresses these pain points by providing a standardized protocol that allows direct connections between financial institutions, eliminating many intermediary steps and associated costs.

The network operates through three core components that work in concert. RippleNet messaging enables secure, real-time communication between institutions, providing end-to-end tracking and rich data exchange that traditional SWIFT messages cannot match. RippleNet processing facilitates the actual movement of funds through optimized routing and settlement mechanisms. Finally, RippleNet access provides the technical infrastructure and APIs that institutions need to integrate with the network seamlessly.
